Today, the market offers a large number of different models of label printers from various manufacturers. Label printer models differ in technical characteristics and price. When choosing a printer model, you must first of all proceed from the nature and structure of the tasks that you intend to solve with its help.

Groups of label printers

  1. Mobile label printer. This is a compact portable printer designed for printing labels and receipts with bar codes. The mobile printer is not used in the process of marking large batches of goods, it is a printer for manual marking of small volumes of products.

  5. RFID printers are desktop, industrial and built-in printers equipped with a module for working with radio frequency tags. The combination of two RFID and bar coding technologies allows you to raise the level of accounting and control to a new level.

Connecting to a computer. Label printers are connected to a PC, like the most common office printers. Moreover, you can print on this printer from any program - a text editor, spreadsheets or the 1C:Enterprise program. Printing barcodes is a bit more complicated, but most printers come with software for developing label designs and generating barcodes. 1C also a module for creating and printing a barcode on a label is provided.

Parameters for selecting a label printer

  1. Number of labels per month.
  2. Maximum number of labels per day.
  3. Label width.
  4. Label printing method - direct thermal or thermal transfer.
  5. Label material.
  6. Printing cost.
  7. Connection interface.
  8. Additional functionality.
  9. Printer manufacturer.

What you need to know to select a label printer

  1. Number of labels per month - it is necessary to determine how many labels are supposed to be printed per month, if up to 5,000 pcs., you can choose from entry-level label printers - desktop models, if more than 5,000 pcs., but less than 10,000 pcs. - these are mid-level printers, if more than 10,000 pcs., you need an industrial-level printer.
  2. Maximum number of labels per day. This parameter is very important: often in manufacturing plants it is necessary to print a large number of labels in one day, for example, to ship a batch of products and apply the buyer's barcode to the packaging. This is a peak load, and although entry-level or mid-level printers can theoretically handle it, you should choose an industrial printer. These printers are designed for high-speed and continuous printing.
  3. Label width. Label printers vary in print width: up to 58 mm; up to 104 mm; up to 160 mm; up to 210 mm.
    Label 58x40 mm.
    58x40
    Label 100x150 mm.
    Label width 100 mm
There are no special questions about the long label, usually all printers can print a label up to one and a half meters long or more.
  4. Direct thermal printing or thermal transfer. Printers with direct thermal printing are cheaper, but they should be purchased only if the printer will solve highly specialized tasks and it is known for sure that printing on materials other than thermal will not be needed. One of the most inexpensive models of thermal printer is TDP-225. Printers with thermal transfer printing are more versatile, they can print in thermal transfer and direct thermal printing modes. Budget thermal transfer label printer — TSC TE 200.
  5. Label material. Label printers can print on a variety of materials: paper, cardboard, film, textile tapes. In principle, thermal transfer label printers can print on any material that can be rolled or folded in a certain way.

From left to right: loop tag (1), peg tag (2), polypropylene label (3), identification tag (4), jewelry tag (5), paper label (6), sealing label (7), textile tape (8).
Consumables for label printers are presented in the «Label» section.
  6. Required print resolution (quality).Label printers can have different print resolutions. If you need to print small text on the label, you need to choose a printer with a high print resolution. The standard print resolution for printers is 203 dpi (203 dots per inch). This print resolution is enough to print a clearly legible barcode label. Sometimes you need to print a large amount of information on small labels. Then you should choose a printer with a resolution of 300, 400 or even 600 dpi.

Of course, you should remember that increasing the print resolution leads to an increase in the cost of both the printer and the cost of printing itself, because the printer's print head has a certain service life. When printing on an industrial scale, you should also take into account that printing with a higher resolution is slower.
  7. Connection interface. The printer connects to the computer from which it takes information to print labels, so it is important to know what ports your computer has and what interfaces are connected.
